History

Peering over the waves of the European inland waterways on a 973 ton ship: this is how Gerard Deen and his wife Monique – at the time still in partnership with father (in law) Ton Jegen – started a company in 1980 that would grow to be Deen Shipping Holding B.V., in short ‘Deen Shipping’.

Five years later they sold the ship and purchased a bigger ship,. followed by the purchase of another ship in 1990. Around the turn of the century, Ton Jegen stepped out of the partnership to enjoy his well-deserved retirement. In 2003, 2007 and 2010, Gerard Deen commissioned newly built ships, all with names from Greek mythology.

In 2007 he stepped down as captain to make place for his son Glenn, and to operate Deen Shipping from the office in Zwijndrecht. Gerard’s first ship with Y-shaped hull, the Apollo, was delivered in 2007 and was nominated for the ship of the year.

In 2011 construction started on the Argonon - the environmentally friendly barge - in collaboration with ship construction company Trico.
